iPads for Primary Grades

Kathy Fuller hope and fear

Kathy Fuller My biggest fear is that the iPads will be damaged by the students. My biggest hope is that the students will gain skills by using the iPads.

My biggest fear for using ipads in the classroom is that I will not have the time to implement them with students like I hope to.
My biggest hope for the ipad is to use awesome applications with groups of students to make learning fun and engaging.

During a search for useful podcasts I was directed by our kindergarten teachers to look at the Hooked on Phonics podcasts. This series of podcasts is free and each one deals with phonic skills for students at the pre-k and kindergarten level of development. The podcasts are engaging with catchy tunes and colorful animations.
I would be able to use these podcasts with groups of kindergarten students as a part of RtI intervention.

Reading and Phonics Apps

My favorite was iKnowPhonics (because many of my initial favorites were already loaded on my iPad). The app was a good fit for my first grade level Title Reading role.

This could be used if I had a projector for my iPad... And it could be a teacher led small group activity or a whole class activity.

Students could use this in my classroom (if I had iPads ) as part of the support with small groups. We could individualize based on skill for the week and also on level of reading.

Electric company podcast

Video podcast

A variety of phonics and writing podcast that can be used to teach qoutations, commas, and letter sounds. The podcast are in fun and fast songs, raps, and skits.
I like the podcast because it can be used to introduce s new concept in a fun way. Students can also create their own song, rap, or skit teaching the concept as a cumulative activity.

Ipodcast from Seseme Street was my favorite! I loved the individual ones for the letter name & sound because they were kid friendly. the word on the street was high interest and that was another favorite of mine on this podcast. My small groups can work on these with a partner or as a small group lesson with teacher leading the way :)

The math app I found that I added, because it was FREE, was "Bills and Coins". It let's students identify coins, and add coins and bills that equal up to $20.00.
